'Courage That Echoes Through Time': Mumbai Police Pays Tribute To Martyrs On 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas

Mumbai: The Mumbai Police paid a heartfelt tribute to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives in the line of duty during the 1999 Kargil War on the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, observed on Saturday, July 26. The day marks India’s decisive victory over Pakistani forces, who had intruded and occupied key positions in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir.

Taking to their official account on X (formerly Twitter), the Mumbai Police posted: “Courage that echoes through time. Today, we pay heartfelt tribute to every valiant martyr who made the supreme sacrifice for the motherland. We remember them with pride and gratitude.”

Across the nation, tributes poured in from leaders, armed forces, and citizens, remembering the unmatched bravery and dedication of the Indian soldiers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, too, extended his greetings to the country on the solemn occasion. He highlighted how Kargil Vijay Diwas serves as a powerful reminder of the exceptional courage and patriotism of India’s armed forces. “Their spirit to sacrifice themselves for the motherland will inspire every generation,” he said.

Kargil Vijay Diwas is commemorated each year on July 26, in remembrance of the victory in Operation Vijay, a large-scale military operation launched by India to reclaim the strategic mountain peaks illegally occupied by Pakistani soldiers and militants. The conflict lasted for more than two months and saw intense combat in the treacherous terrain of the Himalayas.

Pakistani forces had surreptitiously occupied positions along the Line of Control in the Kargil sector, intending to sever India’s transport link to Ladakh and gain control over the region. In response, India launched Operation Vijay to flush out the intruders. By the end of July 1999, Indian troops had successfully regained control of all the infiltrated positions, forcing the Pakistani forces to retreat.

The war, though short-lived, came at a heavy cost, with hundreds of Indian soldiers martyred in action. Their bravery and sacrifice are remembered with deep respect and solemnity every year on this day.
