India has grown to be the second-largest coal producer in the world. On the other hand, China is the largest coal producer with 4,780.0 million tons. India produced 1,085.1 million tons of coal. Interestingly, India has passed countries such as the United States, Indonesia, and Turkey in coal production.
Where does China stand in the same list?
Well, according to the latest report from the Energy Institute’s Statistical Review of World Energy 2024, India a world leader in terms of coal production. China produces coal at a level nearly four times greater than that of India, reflecting China’s industrial and energy demand. However, India’s level of production of 1,085.1 million tons of coal is also significant. In particular, this figure reflects India’s rapidly growing economy and increasing journey to self-reliance in the energy sector.

In India, coal is still the biggest contributor to electricity generation. Thus, the expansion of the coal sector is further enhancing India’s presence in the world.
Which countries has India overtaken in this ranking?
Indonesia ranks in third position with 836.1 million tons, and the United States is fourth with 464.6 million tons. Both of these countries are far behind India. On the other hand, Australia (462.9 million tonnes) and Russia (427.2 million tonnes) also fell behind India in this competition.
Turkey’s production was (87.0 million tons) significantly less than India. Experts indicate that the increase in coal production in India is a good sign for energy security and industrial development. However, there is now much greater emphasis on reducing dependence on coal from an environmental standpoint. The Government of India is concentrating on renewable energy, but a majority of India’s energy requirements are still supplied by coal.
