Kargil War was the time when the Indian Armed Forces showcased their prowess, defeating Pakistan. The neighbouring country was badly defeated in the war on both diplomatic and military fronts. If we talk about Operation Sindoor, the United States’ attitude towards Pakistan was quite soft and sympathetic, but during the Kargil War the situation was completely different, and the then US president Bill Clinton was not happy with Pak and behaved very rudely with Nawaz Sharif.
Notably, Sharif’s offer to meet in private was rejected by Clinton. He even told the then Pak PM that ‘I already told you that if you do not withdraw your troops unconditionally, then there is no need to come here.’
Which Country Supported India During Kargil War?
During the Kargil war, the G-8 countries supported India in the Cologne Summit. The European Union and the ASEAN organisation also stood with India’s efforts to protect the integrity of the Line of Control.
India also received the support of the ASEAN Regional Forum. Amidst the advancing Indian forces and strong international pressure, Pakistan had no option but to retreat. Indian forces had already pushed Pakistan far back.
After initial blunders, the Indian Armed Forces had turned the war in their favour. The then US President was extremely upset with Pakistan’s attitude. Then Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had travelled to Lahore by bus to put an end to the decades-long hostility between the countries.
Clinton Was Very Angry With Pakistan
Following India’s successful “Operation Sindoor”, US President Trump appears to be showing more support for Pakistan. In contrast, during the 1999 Kargil War, then US President Bill Clinton expressed displeasure towards Pakistan. On July 4, 1999, Clinton met with Nawaz Sharif, a meeting that Clinton had reluctantly agreed to.
Clinton had told the Pak PM that he wanted this conversation to be on record. This attitude of US president shocked Sharif. It was the time when the process of improvement in relations between India and America started, which later turned into a strategic partnership.
Sharif then agreed to withdraw his troops remaining within Indian borders.
