‘Avoid travel in…’: India issues advisory for citizens in Cambodia amidst border clashes, launches helpline numbers

The Indian government has told its people in Cambodia to stay away from the border areas between Cambodia and Thailand. This warning comes because fighting between the two countries has entered its third day. The violence started on Thursday and has already taken at least 32 lives, 19 people in Thailand and 13 in Cambodia, as per reports.

The Indian Embassy in Cambodia posted a message on social media (X), saying: “Because of the ongoing clashes at the Cambodia-Thailand border, Indian nationals are advised not to travel to those areas.”

The embassy also asked people to contact them in case of any emergency. The emergency phone number is +855 92881676, and the email is cons.phnompenh@mea.gov.in.

India warns travellers again as Thailand-Cambodia fighting gets worse

A day before, the Indian Embassy in Thailand had also asked Indian tourists to avoid visiting seven provinces near the Cambodian border. The embassy told people to stay updated through official Thai sources like the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s website (TAT Newsroom) for latest news and safety information.

According to CNN, the fight between the two countries has led to a huge crisis, with more than 1 lakh (100,000) people forced to leave their homes within just two days. The reason for this conflict is a very old border dispute. Cambodia says the border should follow a map made during the French colonial rule (before 1953), but Thailand disagrees with that claim.

Now, both Cambodia and Thailand have written to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) asking for help. As per local media, the UNSC has planned an emergency meeting on Saturday to discuss this issue.

Thailand has blamed Cambodia for starting the clash, saying that Cambodian drones were flying near Thai army posts. Meanwhile, Cambodia says that it was Thailand who broke a past agreement, and that led to the fight.
