A woman candidate, who needed medical attention while appearing for a government recruitment event, was gang-raped inside an ambulance in Bihar's Gaya district. The shocking incident happened on  Thursday, July 24, and the accused include the ambulance driver and a technician on board, who were entrusted with taking the 26-year-old applicant safely to the hospital.

On Thursday, Gaya hosted a Home Guard recruitment drive and the survivor was among the applicants. A physical endurance test was part of the event, and the woman reportedly fainted at the Bihar Military Police grounds in Bodh Gaya. As per rules, an ambulance was stationed at the site of the physical test. The organisers in charge quickly evacuated the unconscious woman from the open and took her to the ambulance.

While the vehicle was en route to the hospital, she was raped by multiple men, including the ambulance driver Ajit Kumar and technician Vinay Kumar, NDTV said in a report. The woman understood she was sexually assaulted while she was partly conscious. She informed the hospital authorities of her peril, who then alerted the Gaya Police.

The survivor told the police there were three to four men inside the ambulance, the news report said. It remains unknown if they were asked to board the vehicle to take part in the crime by the driver.

After she gave a statement to the police, an FIR was registered and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to apprehend the accused at the earliest. They managed to locate the ambulance on CCTV footage, which helped to confirm the vehicle's route and timeline.

"When the woman fainted, on July 24, she was rushed to the Anugrah Narain Medical College and Hospital at Gayaji in an ambulance. After she gained consciousness, she alleged that she was raped inside the vehicle," SP (Town) Ramanand Kumar Kaushal told news agency PTI.

"We thereafter detained the driver and a technician who were in the ambulance. The woman also identified them. Their reply was not satisfactory, so they were arrested and booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Samhita," he added.

Kaushal said the medical examination of the complainant has been conducted, and based on the findings of the reports, further action will be taken.

Chirag Paswan hits out at Bihar govt

Union minister Chirag Paswan on Saturday said he felt "sorry to support" the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar, charging it with failure to control the law and order situation in the state.

Paswan, who heads the LJP (Ram Vilas) -- a constituent of the BJP-led NDA, was talking to reporters in Patna before leaving for Gayaji, where he is scheduled to address a rally.

"I have heard claims that the recent spurt in violent crimes is linked to the upcoming assembly polls, and there are attempts to defame this government. Still, it is the responsibility of the administration to keep the law and order situation under control. I feel sorry to support a government which is failing on this count," said the Hajipur MP.

"The situation in the state has become scary. The administrative failure is being blamed on both rank incompetence and connivance with criminals," he added.
