Three Naxalites were killed in an encounter with security forces at the Ghaghra forest in Jharkhand’s Gumla district on Saturday.
The gunfight took place during a joint anti-naxal operation launched by the Jharkhand Jaguar and Gumla Police based on intelligence inputs that members of Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP), a splinter group of CPI(Maoist), had gathered in the area, and were planning an attack on security forces.
According to police, several rounds of bullets were fired from both sides. An AK-47 and two INSAS rifles were recovered from the spot.
IG (Operations) of Jharkhand Police Michael S. Raj said the operation was still underway.
The breakthrough comes amidst the ongoing anti-insurgency efforts in the state, including explosive recoveries and other encounters.
Early this week, 14 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) of 2 kg each, along with local hand grenades, ammonium nitrate powder, and other explosive materials were recovered from the jungles of Chaibasa.
The explosives were seized during a joint operation by the Jharkhand Special Task Force and the CRPF 60 Battalion on July 20.
Last week, two naxals were killed in an encounter with security forces in the Kashitand forest of Lugu hills in Bokaro district. A jawan of the Cobra battalion was martyred in the incident.
