Especially those taxpayers who use ITR-1 and ITR-4 forms should file returns without delay as the online Excel utility of these forms has already been released. But if you have made a mistake while filing the return in a hurry, like missing a source of income or filling any personal information incorrectly, then there is no need to panic. You can revise your return.
Have you made a mistake? So correct it soon, otherwise you may get a notice
Mistakes made in the return can be serious. Like hiding the source of income or filling the wrong number of bank account. But if you catch the mistake in time, then you can avoid income tax notice by filing revised return by 31 December 2025.
Some of the common mistakes that taxpayers often make include:
– Selecting the wrong ITR form
– Mistakes in personal information
– Mistakes in bank account details
– Not disclosing all income sources
– Not claiming deductions that you could have received
– Claiming deductions for which you do not have documents
How to revise the return?
To revise the return, first log in to the Income Tax e-filing portal. Then go to the ‘E-file’ tab, select ‘File Income Tax Return’, select the relevant assessment year (2025-26) and click on the ‘Revised Return under Section 139(5)’ option.
Note that while filing the revised return, you will have to enter the acknowledgement number of the previously filed return. If you have filed the return offline i.e. in paper mode, which can be done by senior citizens above 80 years of age, then the amendment will also have to be done in paper mode.
The last date for revising the return is 31 December 2025. One good thing is that you can revise the return more than once. There is no additional fee or penalty for this. Even if your refund is processed, you can still file a revised return. However, just as it is mandatory to verify the original return, it is also necessary to verify the revised return within 30 days from the date of filing the return.
