BJD slams rising crimes against women

Pradeep Majhi

Koraput: Opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Saturday staged a protest outside the South Western range DIG office here, condemning the rise in crimes against women and blaming the BJP-led state government for failing to ensure their safety.

Senior BJD leader and spokesperson Pradeep Majhi cited a spike in incidents, including the rape of a 15-year-old girl in Malkangiri and a brutal attack on a nursing student in Nabarangpur.

The nursing student from Raighar block was allegedly assaulted in Jeypore Town.

Though an FIR was filed and the accused initially detained, he was later released and reportedly returned to torment the victim, who later attempted suicide.

Her condition remains critical, according to hospital sources.

Majhi criticised police ineffi ciency, saying the student had to file two FIRs in different jurisdictions.

He blamed the “so-called double-engine government” for the lack of justice and vowed continued protests until women feel safe in Odisha.
