Lions Club official leads sapling drive to promote environmental awareness
In a commendable effort to promote environmental conservation, Gurdeep Singh Kang — District Chairman (Peace Poster) of Lions International District 321-D — distributed saplings to environmental enthusiasts on Friday. The event was held at his office, Kang Enterprises, located in Central Town, Phagwara.
The initiative was organised under the guidance of District Governor V.M. Goyal and drew the participation of several dignitaries, including Additional Deputy Commissioner-cum-Municipal Commissioner Dr. Akshita Gupta and Phagwara Mayor Rampal Uppal.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Gupta lauded the initiative and emphasised the importance of not only planting trees but also nurturing them until they flourish. She urged all citizens to take active responsibility in preserving the environment, describing it as a collective duty.
Poornima Pooja, IEC Expert from the Phagwara Municipal Corporation, highlighted the ongoing campaign titled “Adopt Cleanliness, Drive Away Disease,” which runs until July 31. She appealed to the public to support the initiative wholeheartedly to ensure a cleaner, healthier city.
Mayor Rampal Uppal praised Gurdeep Singh Kang for his continued commitment to social service and environmental causes. “Lion Kang’s dedication to community welfare and environmental protection is truly inspiring,” he said.
Addressing the gathering, Gurdeep Singh Kang expressed gratitude to the dignitaries for their presence and reiterated the urgent need for environmental action. “Our very existence on Earth depends on the availability of natural resources — particularly water, air, and trees. Without them, life is unsustainable,” he said. He stressed that rising air pollution and water misuse are serious concerns that demand immediate human intervention and that planting and protecting trees is the need of the hour.
He further pledged to continue such initiatives in the future and called on the community to participate in reforestation efforts, highlighting how trees are vital companions from birth to death, providing clean air and ecological balance.
The event was also attended by social activist Advocate Anu Sharma, Baba Balak Nath Seva Samiti patrons Dharampal Nischal and S.P. Basra, along with members of Lions Club Phagwara Champion — Secretary Dinesh Kharbanda, Treasurer Ajay Kumar, Vipin Sharma, Sukhbir Kinnara, Satvinder Singh Bhamra, Ramesh Shingari, Vicky Chhumber, and others.
