US, UK, Canada lose their shine…, Bangladesh, Uzbekistan become new choice of Indians due to…
New Delhi: Is the charm of western countries like America, Britain, Canada fading among Indian students? Do Indian students no longer want to take admission here? We are not saying this, but the data of the Government of India itself is testifying this. The Ministry of External Affairs presented a new data in Parliament. It was told that the number of Indian students going to popular western countries for higher education has seen a huge decline in 2024 as compared to 2023.
Which countries saw decline of Indian students?
However, the number of students going abroad still remains the same, but the figures clearly indicate a decline. In 2023, 8.92 lakh students went abroad to get a degree while in 2024 their number came down to 7.59 lakh. The biggest decline in the number of Indian students has been seen to Canada, America and Britain. Generally, these three countries are considered the most popular among Indian students and Indians have the highest number of foreign students in America and Canada.
What is the rate of decline in these three countries?
The biggest decline has been seen in Canada. Political tension with India and then the tightening of visa rules have been the main reason for this. The number of Indians studying in Canada in 2023 was 2,33,532, which decreased to 1,37,608 in 2024. This is a decline of 41 percent. 2.34 lakh Indians went to study in the US in 2023, but in 2024 this number came down to 2.04 lakh. Here too, the tightening of visa policies has become the reason for the decline. 1.36 lakh Indians went to Britain in 2023, while in 2024 their number decreased to 98 thousand.
Which countries are now preferred by Indian students?
The most surprising thing here is that while Indians are getting disillusioned with popular study abroad destinations, they are now opting for unexpected countries. Most Indian students are preferring to study in countries like Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, Russia and Singapore. The main reason for this is the affordable education available in these countries, easy visa rules and focus on medical education. Countries like Bangladesh, Uzbekistan, Russia are attracting a large number of medical students every year.
What do the statistics say?
The number of Indian students in Bangladesh increased from 20,368 in 2023 to 29,232 in 2024. 6,601 Indian students came to Uzbekistan in 2023, while 9,915 students went to study here in 2024. There were 25,503 Indians in Russia in 2023, whose number increased to 31,444 in 2024. The main reason for this is the medical education here. A slight increase was also registered in Singapore, where more than 14,000 Indian students enrolled in 2024, while this number was 12,000 in 2023.
