New York police officer killed in Manhattan shooting was a Bangladeshi immigrant with pregnant wife

The New York police officer who was killed in the mass shooting inside a Manhattan skyscraper was a Bangladeshi immigrant and was off duty, according to police officials. Didarul Islam, 36, was working a security shift in the building when the shooting took place.

Islam was described as a veteran and served in the NYPD’s 47th Precinct in the Bronx for three and a half years. He is survived by a wife and two sons. His wife, who is 8 months pregnant, is about to give birth to their third child, according to the CNN.

Mayor Eric Adams said at a press conference late on Monday, “He was doing what he does best, and all members of the police department carry out, he was saving lives.”

Adams also said that he met with Islam’s family Monday night. He described Islam as a person of faith, saying, “He was protecting New Yorkers. He’s an immigrant from Bangladesh, and he loved this city, and everyone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith and a person who believed in God and believed in living out the life of a godly person.”

Islam was off duty on Monday and was working as security for Rudin Management Company for the building. He was, however, in his uniform when he died, sources said. Some companies often hire officers to provide extra uniform security, according to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who spoke at the press conference."He put himself in harm's way. He made the ultimate sacrifice — shot in cold blood," she said.

NYPD News made a post on X saying, “Police Officer Didarul Islam represented the very best of our department. He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short today.

According to sources who spoke to Protamalo, Islam was from Kulaura Upazila of Maulvibazar in Bangladesh.

Who was the Manhattan shooter?

A total of four individuals, including the officer, died after a gunman opened fire inside a Manhattan skyscraper. A fifth victim is in a critical condition. The gunman also took his own life after the shooting.

Surveillance camera footage showed the gunman, who has been identified as Shane Tamura, 27, entering the Lobby of 345 Park Avenue at 52nd Street in Manhattan and opening fire with an AR-15 style rifle. Tamura then got on an elevator to the 33rd floor, where the National Football League offices are located, shot someone and then himself.

The shooter was a native of Hawaii who had moved to Las Vegas. He had crossed the country by road to reach New York. Papers found on the shooter's body indicated he had grievances with the NFL and its handling of CTE, a brain disease linked to head trauma. Sources told CNN that Tamura was a competitive football player in his youth.

There have been 254 mass shootings in the United States this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
