Rajya Sabha adjourned till 2 pm amid Opposition protest over Bihar SIR

Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned till 2 pm on Tuesday due to Opposition uproar following rejection of their adjournment notices to discuss various issues, including the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.

The members had submitted 24 notices under rule 267 seeking discussion on various issues including Bihar SIR.

Congress MPs Ranjeet Ranjan, Randeep Singh Surjewala, Rajiv Shukla, Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Manoj Jha and TMC member Saket Gokhale along with others submitted notices for discussion on Bihar SIR.

TMC’s Sagarika Ghosh demanded discussion on alleged discrimination with Bengali people in other states. One notice was for discussion on sudden resignation of former Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar from his post.

Deputy Chairman Harivansh refused to allow the notices, citing a previous ruling of the Chair, which prompted an uproar in the House as Opposition members raised slogans and moved close to the Well.

The Chair urged members to allow Zero Hour and Question Hour proceedings to continue in the House. However, as members remained firm on their demands, the proceedings were adjourned till 2 pm.

The day’s proceedings began with the Upper House congratulating Divya Deshmukh, who defeated Koneru Humpy in an all-Indian final to become the first Indian champion of the FIDE Women’s Chess World Cup.

The Rajya Sabha is also scheduled to hold discussions on Operation Sindoor on Tuesday.

India
