Lakhs of people use the metro daily to commute and reach their destinations. Delhi Metro is called Delhi-NCR’s lifeline. It is not only a great transport system but also an example of excellent management. But do you know how much electricity is consumed by the operation of the Delhi Metro every day?
How much electricity is consumed by Delhi Metro every day?
Delhi Metro, which is the lifeline of the capital and surrounding areas, consumes about 30 lakh units of electricity every day. This figure is about 2.5% of the total electricity consumption of Delhi, which is really shocking.
According to the average electricity price in Delhi, the daily electricity consumption cost of the metro is around Rs 1.83 crore. This expense is incurred due to operating metro trains, lighting of stations, running elevators, escalators and ventilation systems.
What is the source of electricity of Delhi Metro?
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) gets 50% of this electricity from the discoms of Delhi, UP and Haryana. The remaining power is obtained from 99 MW of off-site solar plants and 140 MW of rooftop solar plants. With this, DMRC is using solar energy to protect the environment.
DMRC has adequate backup facilities. In case of emergency, traction has an average of four sub-stations, so that power can be taken from other sub-stations if any sub-station fails. This helps in maintaining a smooth operation of the metro.
