J&K UT Jr Basketball C’ship commences

REASI, July 29: The J&K UT Junior Basketball Championship began today at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board Sports Complex in Katra, with 20 teams-both men’s and women’s-drawn from 14 districts of the Union Territory participating with vigour and determination. Organised jointly by the J&K Basketball Association and the Shrine Board under the aegis of the J&K Sports Council, this is the first time the UT-level tournament is being held in Katra.
First-day action saw several competitive matches across both sections. In the men’s match, Poonch secured a narrow 24-22 win over Samba, while Rajouri delivered a dominant 41-17 victory against Jammu B. In the women’s section, Kathua comfortably defeated Baramulla by 37-17 and in men’s fixtures, Kathua edged Udhampur by 20-13. Kishtwar also triumphed over Akhnoor with a comprehensive 24-4 scoreline.
Present on the occasion were Dr Vikram Handa, President of JKBA; Ashok Singh Jamwal, Senior Vice President; Aman Sharma, General Secretary; and Sushma Jamwal, Chief Coach and observer from J&K Sports Council, along with Shaktish Chopra, former manager and basketball coach at JKSC.
Aman Sharma said that a total of 16 probable players-eight men and eight women-would be selected from this Championship to attend a coaching camp before representing the UT team at the Junior National Basketball Championship, scheduled in Ludhiana from September 2 to 9.
The matches were overseen by a panel of qualified referees and coaches including Sachin Dogra (SAI), Rohan Kundal, Manoj Kumar, Vaneet Pangotra, Rajesh Bandral, Amanjot Singh, Hritik Khullar, Jaskeerat Singh, Abhinav Sharma and Vinod Dogra, ensuring professionalism and fair play from the tournament’s launch.
