New Delhi: A powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Russia’s Far East on Wednesday. The massive quake triggered Tsunami in the northern Pacific and prompting alerts from Alaska and Hawaii to coastal regions as far south as New Zealand. Tsunami warnings or advisories have been issued for: Russia, Japan, Taiwan, The Philippines, China, Hawaii, Guam, California, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, Canada.
Tsunami alert sirens rang out Tuesday in Honolulu, prompting residents to head for higher ground. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, a 40-centimetre (1.3 feet) tsunami was recorded in Tokachi, located on the southern shore of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost main island.
Tsunami waves detected on Pacific coast of Alaska
The US’s National Weather Service (NWS) in Anchorage reports that Tsunami waves have been detected by coastal gauges along Alaska’s East Aleutian Islands and the Pacific side of the Alaska Peninsula. The NWS said there has been no change to the situation and areas that are under tsunami warnings and advisories – from California to Alaska – remain so.
First tsunami waves reach Hawaii
According to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Tsunami waves appear to be reaching Hawaii as water levels have risen suddenly around Kahului, Nawiliwili, Honolulu and Pearl Harbor.
