A powerful 8.8-magnitude undersea earthquake struck off Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula early on Wednesday, triggering tsunami waves of up to 4 metres (13 feet) and prompting evacuations in the area and across most of Japan’s east coast, officials said.
Strongest earthquake in the region since 1952, Russia said the epicentre of the quake was at a depth of 74 km and was located 133 km southeast of Petropavlovsk‑Kamchatsky, as per the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.
Authorities in Russia said that several buildings were damaged and emergency protocols activated. However, no major injuries or casualties have been reported so far. According to other reports, the tsunami has also hit coastal areas of Russia’s Kuril Islands and Japan’s large northern island of Hokkaido.
