Jammu police arrest youth involved in road rage incident

Jammu Police on Wednesday arrested the accused involved in a shocking road rage incident, in which an elderly man was deliberately run over twice by an SUV — a crime that sparked nationwide outrage after the video went viral.

In an official statement issued Wednesday evening, police said, “The accused Thar driver, Manan Anand, son of Rajinder Anand, resident of Nanak Nagar, Jammu, who had been absconding, has been arrested by Gandhi Nagar Police. He has been booked under Sections 281, 125(a), and 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).”

The incident occurred on Sunday in the Gandhi Nagar area, when Kamal Dutta (68) was riding his scooty and was struck by an over-speeding Thar. As Dutta fell to the ground, the driver allegedly reversed the vehicle and hit him again, critically injuring him.

Earlier on Wednesday, Dutta — who had been in serious condition since the incident — was shifted to a hospital in Chandigarh for advanced treatment.

As the ambulance departed from Government Medical College, Jammu, angry relatives gathered at the scene, expressing frustration that police had failed to arrest the accused for several days despite clear CCTV footage showing the incident. The accused, Manan Anand, is reportedly an engineering student.

Speaking to the media, Dutta’s daughter, Priyanka, said, “If anything happens to my father, I will make sure Manan pays for it.” She accompanied her unconscious father in the ambulance to Chandigarh.

Public outrage had been mounting over the delay in arresting the accused, who now faces charges including attempt to murder.
