Trump announces new US-Pakistan trade deal to develop ‘massive’ oil reserves, says ‘maybe they’ll be selling oil to India’
Just hours after putting a 25 per cent tax and extra penalties on Indian goods, US President Donald Trump announced a new trade deal with India’s terror-harbouring neighbour Pakistan on Wednesday (local time). He said the two countries will work together to explore and develop Pakistan’s large oil reserves. Trump also said that they are now picking the oil company that will take the lead in this partnership. Sharing the update on his social media platform, Truth Social, he added that maybe one day Pakistan could even sell oil to India.
“We have just concluded a Deal with the Country of Pakistan, whereby Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive Oil Reserves. We are in the process of choosing the Oil Company that will lead this Partnership. Who knows, maybe they’ll be selling Oil to India some day!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
The remarks came after Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff and extra penalties on Indian imports starting August 1, Trump said the decision was due to America’s trade gap with India and India’s continued purchase of oil from Russia.
In a message on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump shared that he had spoken to several world leaders about trade. He said that many of them are eager to strike deals that benefit the United States.
“We’re very busy at the White House today working on trade agreements,” he wrote. “I’ve talked to leaders from many countries, and they all want to make the U.S. very happy.”
He mentioned an upcoming meeting with trade officials from South Korea, which currently faces a 25% tariff. Trump said South Korea is offering something in return to lower that tariff and that he’s looking forward to hearing their proposal.
He also added that several countries are now making similar offers to reduce tariffs, which he believes will help the U.S. cut down its trade deficit significantly. A full report, he said, will be shared later. He ended his post with his familiar slogan: “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
What Pakistan’s Foreign Minister said on trade deal
Last week, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said that his country and the United States were “very close” to finalising a trade deal, which could be announced within days. His comments came after a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday.
According to both sides, Dar and Rubio spoke about increasing trade and cooperation, especially in key areas like critical minerals and mining. Other Pakistani leaders have also been visiting the U.S. recently for similar discussions.
