Features of the Expressway

The Gorakhpur Link Expressway starts from Jaitpur (NH-27) in Gorakhpur and connects to the Purvanchal Expressway at Salarpur in Azamgarh. This 91.35 km long four-lane expressway connects Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar and Azamgarh districts. Its total cost has been Rs 5876.67 crore, including land acquisition.

The expressway consists of 7 flyovers, 7 major bridges, 27 minor bridges, 16 vehicle underpasses, 50 minor underpasses and 35 regular underpasses. This route enables the distance from Lucknow to Gorakhpur to be covered in 3-3.5 hours, which will save a lot of travel time.

Preparation for toll collection

UPDA has selected the agency for toll collection, which will have to collect toll fee as well as operate four advance category ambulances, four safety vehicles and four patrolling vehicles. Toll gates have been built at many places including Bhagwanpur toll plaza. Trial of toll collection was done for three days from July 20, in which vehicles were given slips but no fee was taken. Now regular toll collection will start from August 1.

Benefit to passengers and business

With the opening of this expressway, connectivity between Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, Azamgarh and Lucknow has improved. It not only reduces travel time but will also boost business. Especially the Tanda textile industry of Sant Kabir Nagar is expected to benefit from this. Apart from this, travel to neighboring countries like Nepal will also become easier, which will increase business activities.

CM Yogi inaugurated it

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the expressway on June 20, 2025 at ceremonies held near Salarpur in Azamgarh and Bhagwanpur toll plazas in Gorakhpur. Vehicle movement has started since the inauguration, and now the project will be fully operational with toll collection. According to UPDA, the expressway is expected to generate toll revenue of Rs 60 crore in the first year.
