Vice presidential election schedule announced; poll to be held on September 9

The Election Commission, on Friday, announced that the Vice Presidential election will be held on September 9.
According to the EC, the results will be announced on the same day.
The vice president of India is elected by an Electoral College comprising the elected members and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and the elected members of the Lok Sabha.
The notification for the election will be issued on August 7, and the last date for filing nomination papers is August 21.
The election to the the second highest constitutional office in the country was necessitated due to the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21 from the post citing medical reasons.

On Thursday, the EC had announced that it finalised the Electoral College for the vice presidential election.
The EC further said the Electoral College list will be available for purchase at a counter set up in the EC office from the date of notification.
According to Clause 2 of Article 68 of the Constitution, the poll to fill a vacancy in the office of the vice president occurring due to his death, resignation or removal, or otherwise, will be held "as soon as possible".
The person elected to fill the vacancy will be entitled to hold office "for the full term of five years from the date on which he enters upon his office".
Dhankhar had resigned as vice president on July 21, a little more than two years ahead of the end of his tenure. His term was to end on August 10, 2027.
