CBI Court Mohali Convicts Five Retd Police Officers In A Fake Encounter Case

New Delhi/Mohali, Aug 1: A Special CBI Court in Mohali (Punjab) today convicted five Police Officers including a retired SSP and DSP in connection with a fake encounter case.
The court convicted Bhupinderjit Singh, DSP (Retired as SSP), Devinder Singh, ASI (Retired as DSP), Gulbarg Singh, ASI (Retired as Inspector), Suba Singh, Inspector (Retired as Inspector) and Raghubir Singh, ASI (Retired as SI) in a stage managed encounter case.
According to the information, this case was registered in 1999 by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following an order by the apex court.
The case was registered against Gurdev Singh, Inspr/SHO PS Sirhali, Gulberg Singh, ASI PS Sirhali, Devinder Singh, ASI PS Sirhali and others on the allegation of abduction and killing of Shinder Singh by accused police officers.
On completion of investigation, it was established that Shinder Singh, Sukhdev Singh and Desa Singh (all SPOs of Punjab Police) were abducted by police party led by Inspector Gurdev Singh, SHO P.S. Sirhali on 27.06.1993. Similarly, Balkar Singh alias Kala was also abducted on the said date. Apart from this, Sarabjit Singh alias Saba and Harwinder Singh were abducted by Suba Singh, SHO P.S Verowal in July, 1993. Thereafter, on July 12, 1993, Shinder Singh, Desa Singh, Balkar Singh along with one Mangal Singh were killed in a fake encounter by police team led by DSP Bhupinderjit Singh and officials of P.S. Sirhali.
Consequently, on July 28, 1993, Sukhdev Singh, Sarabjit Singh alias Saba and Harwinder Singh were killed in a fake encounter by police team led by DSP Bhupinderjit Singh and officials of P.S. Verowal.
On May 5, 2022, the CBI filed the chargesheet in the case against the ten police officers, DSP Bhupinderjit Singh, ASI Devinder Singh, ASI Gulbarg Singh, Inspector Suba Singh, ASI Raghubir Singh, Inspector Gurdev Singh (Passed away during the trial), SI Gian Chand (Passed away during the trial), ASI Jagir Singh (Passed away during the trial), HC Mohinder Singh (Passed away during the trial), HC Aroor Singh (Passed away during the trial)
The CBI Court will pronounce the verdict in the quantum of sentence in the matter on August 8. (Agencies)
