Janhit: Communal Tensions Erupt in Pune After Dispute Over Shivaji Statue | ABP NEWS

Violence broke out in Pune, Maharashtra, after a clash between two groups escalated into communal tension. The conflict reportedly began last week when a member of a particular religious group allegedly vandalized a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. This act sparked outrage, leading to retaliatory actions by the other community. On the day of the incident, tensions intensified when a group of individuals attempted to hoist saffron flags on a mosque, triggering stone-pelting from both sides. Massive crowds gathered near the mosque, some holding saffron flags. Police were forced to use tear gas to disperse the violent mob, which retaliated with further stone-pelting. Several vehicles and houses were damaged during the unrest. Broken glass and large stones were seen scattered on the streets. Police have detained one local boy who had posted objectionable content on social media, which is believed to have contributed to the provocation. Authorities have imposed Section 144 in the affected areas for two days. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar visited Yavat village, met with victims, and urged both communities to maintain peace. While the situation is under control now, the atmosphere remains tense.
