Berhampur: Notorious Criminal Sunil Nahak Nabbed After Police Encounter

Berhampur: In a significant development, Golanthara police arrested dreaded criminal Sunil Nahak, alias Mala, following a fierce encounter in Odisha’s Ganjam district in the early hours of Saturday.
Nahak, a resident of I.B Road village under Kabisurya Nagar PS, has 20 pending criminal cases across multiple police stations.
The arrest comes in the wake of a spate of chain-snatching incidents reported in Nimakhandi, Gopalpur, and Golanthara police station areas over the past few weeks.
In one chilling case under Nimakhandi PS, two bike-borne assailants fired at a 35-year-old woman while she was returning home with her two children, snatching her gold chain. The victim narrowly escaped harm.
Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by DySP Bibekananda Swain tracked Nahak’s movements. At around 5:30 AM, the team confronted the suspect near Golanthara. Nahak opened fire, discharging two bullets that struck the police vehicle.
In self-defense, the police retaliated, injuring Nahak in his left leg. He was immediately apprehended and shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital for treatment. His accomplice, however, managed to flee the scene.
Police recovered a pistol, three live rounds, two spent cartridges, and Rs. 21,000 in cash from Nahak’s possession.
A case has been registered at Golanthara PS, with SDPO Sadar, DySP Subranshu Parida, leading the investigation to apprehend the remaining suspects and recover stolen goods.
Investigation is going on to arrest the other accused persons and to recover the robber chains, informed Berhampur SP Dr Saravana Vivek M.
