Heavy vehicle entry restricted on Airport Road during peak hours

To ensure smooth flow of traffic, prevent accidents and enhance commuter safety, the administration has imposed restrictions on the movement of heavy vehicles along Airport Road (PR-7), specifically from the Sector-66/82 junction to the Airport roundabout, during peak hours.

The restriction will prohibit heavy vehicles from plying on the stretch from 8 am to 11 am in the morning and 5 pm to 8 pm in the evening. The order shall come into effect from August 4, and will remain in force until further notice.

“Heavy Vehicles” shall include trucks, lorries, multi-axle goods carriers and construction equipment transporters.

Exemptions have been provided to the emergency vehicles (ambulances, fire tenders, police and disaster response vehicles), vehicles transporting perishable or essential commodities (milk, drinking water, medical supplies), government and municipal utility vehicles on urgent duty.

District Magistrate Komal Mittal said the Airport Road (PR-7) often faces severe traffic congestion during peak hours, causing significant inconvenience to commuters, frequent traffic bottlenecks, and an increased risk of road accidents. “Being a key arterial link between Mohali, Chandigarh and the Chandigarh International Airport, the corridor witnesses heavy daily traffic, including office-goers, school buses, and public transport. To ensure safer and hassle-free commuting, this regulatory measure has been enforced,” she added.

The District Magistrate has directed the Senior Superintendent of Police, SAS Nagar, and the Chief Engineer, GMADA, to ensure strict implementation of this order through effective enforcement measures and appropriate traffic signage along the restricted route.

Any person found violating this directive shall face penal action under the relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, BNSS, 2023, and other applicable laws.
