Landslide threat: Several houses vacated in Chamba villages

Continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days has triggered multiple landslides across Chamba district, forcing authorities to evacuate residents from several villages due to the increasing risk of house collapses and slope failures. In the Charada area of Churah subdivision, seven houses in Bhuleen village were vacated after cracks appeared and the land started sliding dangerously close to the village. SDM Ankur Thakur confirmed that families in both areas were safely shifted to secure locations.

In Gunu village of Kureda panchayat, under the Chamba development block, another eight houses were vacated as a precautionary measure after the hill slopes nearby became unstable.

Meanwhile, panic has gripped residents of Janjala village in Kariyan panchayat, located near the district headquarters, where frequent landslides have forced many to take shelter in the homes of relatives or friends. In Lamhotta village of Khadojat panchayat in the Himgiri region, a house collapsed due to the ongoing rains.

In Dalyund village of Bharela panchayat under Salooni subdivision, a retaining wall gave way, posing further risk to nearby house. Active landslides have also intensified in Baroth and Khundel panchayats of Bharmour, raising serious concern among residents.

The downpour has not only disrupted daily life but has also severely affected agriculture and horticulture in the region. Crop damage and falling apple yields are compounding the financial distress for many rural families.
