Delhi rains: In a significant threat to the national capital, the Yamuna river inches closer to the danger mark intensifying the risk. As per media reports, continuous rainfall in upstream areas and water release from the Hathnikund Barrage have pushed the river’s water level to 204.14 meters, just short of the danger level of 204.5 meters, prompting authorities to issue warnings and advisories.
Flood alert in Delhi?
Keeping in mind the ongoing heavy rainfall, officials have warned that the river may cross the danger mark within 24 to 48 hours. People living in low-lying areas have been advised to evacuate, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent a repeat of the 2023 floods.
Heavy rainfall lashed several parts
Heavy rainfall lashed several parts of Delhi on Sunday, bringing relief from humidity but also leading to waterlogging in various areas across the national capital. Areas including Vijay Chowk, Connaught Place, Minto Bridge, Sarojini Nagar, AIIMS, and Panchkuian Marg witnessed intense showers.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier predicted light to moderate rainfall in the Delhi-NCR region on Thursday morning. Rainfall was also reported in areas such as Janpath, Lajpat Nagar and the Minto Bridge, a day after heavy showers affected routine life across parts of the city.
Heavy rain causes flood-like situation in UP’s Prayagraj
Incessant heavy rainfall has caused a flood situation in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj District. Public life in the area remains severely affected due to consistent downpours and resultant waterlogging. On Sunday morning, a man was seen using a boat to commute to his work as the streets got flooded in Prayagraj’s Karela Bagh area, following heavy rainfall.
At the same time, the water level of the River Ganga is continuously rising following heavy rainfall in Varanasi. On Saturday, the Ganga River reached close to the danger mark because heavy rains have been happening from the mountains to the plains for several days.
