Did brother stab baby sister's rapist in Alappuzha? Here's the truth behind Kerala viral video
The video of the brutal attack had gone viral on the internet | Facebook
A violent face-off between two Kerala youths had gone viral on the internet lately. It showed an angry young man attacking the other in broad daylight until the victim fell on the road bleeding. He was stabbed using a knife and repeatedly beaten in public by the other, and nobody came forward to break up the conflict that took place in the Alappuzha district. The viral video also showed the attacker warning the victim that he would claim his remaining life as policemen separated them and helped the latter up.
Many people who shared the viral video online said that the public refused to help the youngster because he was a child abuser. The man who attacked him was the brother of a 12-year-old girl whom the other had sexually assaulted. The brutal attack was his act of vengeance against his sister's rapist, they said.
The narrative resulted in thousands reacting to the video with 'love' reactions. In a classic case of mob mentality taking over public imagination, numerous people embraced the attack, saying that more brothers should come forward to deliver instant justice to rapists and not wait for the system to feed them sumptuously behind bars. If a few rapists and molesters are physically confronted on the streets by the kin of their victims, others will fear to commit crimes against women in the future, they said.
However, the story has taken a dramatic twist. A police probe confirmed that the man who was beaten was accused of raping the girlfriend of the accused, and not his sister. The accused, along with his friend, created a fake Facebook account to track down the man who reportedly drugged and sexually assaulted his girlfriend.
What led to the brutal attack?
Kannur native Riyas spotted a girl looking for her lost ornament in Ooty a few months back. He told the girl that he had found the necklace earlier and had given it to a nearby shop. On the pretext of taking her to the shop, he asked her to board his car and drugged her before sexually assaulting her, Sibi, who later attacked Riyas in Alappuzha, told the police. Sibi visited Kannur many times to find Riyas but never could, Manorama Online said in a report quoting the police. It was then that his friend helped him create a fake Facebook profile using his girlfriend's name and managed to get in touch with Riyas.
Believing it was indeed the girl he knew from Ooty, Riyas agreed to meet Sibi in Alappuzha on July 31. Sibi and his friend spotted Riyas near the KSRTC bus stand around 5:30 PM and attacked him.
