Safira, stepdaughter of Sunjay Kapur, drops her last name

Amid the much-publicised family dispute over the estimated Rs 30,000 crore business empire of Sunjay Kapur, chairman of Sona Comstar, who passed away in London on June 12 while playing polo, Safira, his stepdaughter and daughter of his third wife Priya Sachdev Kapur, dropped the 'Chatwal' suffix from her name and opted for 'Safira Kapur'.

 

Safira is the daughter of Priya and businessman Vikram Chatwal.

 

According to media reports, she dropped her last name from her social media profiles.

Meanwhile, her mother, too, has reportedly changed her name to  'Priya Sunjay Kapur' after assuming her role on the board of Comstar.

 

A Reddit thread in this regard reads: "The drama is playing out. Priya Sachdev's daughter, whose name on Instagram until last month was Safira Chatwal. Now she suddenly dropped her surname 'chatwal'. Priya went from Priya Sachdev Kapur to Priya Sunjay Kapur.”

Public debate continues regarding Safira’s exact status and inheritance rights, but no official statement confirms a legal name change or details of her share in the Kapur estate.

 

A few days ago, shareholders of auto components firm Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd approved the appointment of Priya Sachdev Kapur as a non-executive director with the requisite majority. She was appointed as an Additional Director in the capacity of Non-Executive Director with effect from June 23.

 

Rani Kapur, mother of Sunjay and former chairperson of the Sona group, in a letter dated July 24 to the board alleged that while the family mourned the death of Sunjay last month, some people chose this as an opportune time to wrest control and usurp the family legacy.
