Naming row over Koriawas Medical College intensifies

The row over the naming of Maharishi Chyawan Medical College at Koriawas village here has gained momentum, with protesters claiming that over 100 gram panchayats had submitted their resolutions to the district authorities regarding the renaming of the college after freedom fighter Rao Tula Ram.

The protesters took out a tractor march from Koriawas to Narnaul, where they submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Vivek Bharti. The panchayat resolutions were also attached to the memorandum, which was addressed to the Chief Minister.

The protesters reiterated that the indefinite dharna outside the college would continue until their demand was accepted.

“The submission of resolutions by over 100 gram panchayats across the district shows that people want Maharishi Chyawan Medical College to be renamed after Rao Tula Ram. Among these, 53 panchayats are from Narnaul, 27 from Nangal Choudhary, and 20 from the Mahendragarh Assembly constituency,” claimed Nonihal, a protester.

He added that residents from nearby villages gathered at the dharna site in the morning and held a tractor march that culminated at the Mini Secretariat. “Today marks the 92nd day of our dharna,” he said.

The agitation has become a major issue in the Ahirwal region, especially after former minister and BJP MLA from Narnaul, Om Prakash Yadav, extended his support to the protest.

Yadav warned that the BJP and its leaders might face electoral setbacks if the demand was not met. The BJP won three of four Assembly seats in Mahendragarh district in the 2024 elections. Arti Singh Rao, MLA from Ateli, serves as the state Health Minister.

The college began operations on May 1 with the launch of OPD services in key departments, and it was expected that MBBS classes would commence from the upcoming academic session. However, the college recently failed to secure a place among the institutions listed by the Medical Counselling Committee for the first round of counselling for MBBS and BDS admissions.
