Satyapal Malik was the last governor of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state from August 2018 to October 2019. It was during his tenure that Article 370 was repealed on 5 August 2019 and the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was abolished and it was divided into two union territories – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Coincidentally, today is the sixth anniversary of this decision and on this day Satyapal Malik breathed his last.
He was the Governor of Bihar from October 2017 to August 2018. He was also given the additional charge of serving as the Governor of Odisha from 21 March 2018 to 28 May 2018. Political journey of Satyapal Malik
Satyapal Malik was born in a Jat family on 24 July 1946 in Hisavada village of Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh. He obtained a Bachelor of Science and LLB degree from Meerut University. In the year 1968-69, he was elected the Student Union President of Meerut University, which marked the beginning of his political career. His first major tenure as a politician was as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly during 1974-77. He represented Uttar Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1986 and 1986-89. He was a member of the 9th Lok Sabha from Aligarh as a member of the Janata Dal from 1989 to 1991.
Left Lok Dal and joined Congress
In 1980, Satyapal Malik was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the Chaudhary Charan Singh-led Lok Dal. But he joined the Congress in 1984 and the party sent him to the Rajya Sabha in 1986. He resigned from the Congress in 1987 after the Bofors scandal was exposed and joined V.P. Singh. In 1989, he won the Lok Sabha election from Aligarh as a Janata Dal candidate and in 1990, briefly served as Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Tourism.
In 2004, Malik joined the BJP and contested the Lok Sabha elections from Baghpat, but lost to then RLD chief Ajit Singh. In its first term, the Modi government appointed Malik as the head of the parliamentary team considering the Land Acquisition Bill. His panel made several recommendations against the bill, following which the government shelved the major reform. Satyapal Malik was the first politician to be appointed as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir since the start of militancy in Kashmir.
After being sent from Jammu and Kashmir to Goa Raj Bhavan, a change in Satyapal Malik’s stance was seen and he became his biggest critic from a Modi supporter. Satyapal Malik had announced before the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections that he would support the RLD and the Samajwadi Party. Talking to reporters in his village Hisawada in Baghpat, he had said, ‘I have no intention of joining active politics, rather I want to work as a guide for RLD and SP and fight for the welfare and rights of the farmers who have fallen victim to the anti-farmer policies of the Modi government.’
