Berhampur: One Arrested in Rs 9 Crore Online Investment Fraud Case

Berhampur: The Cyber Crime & Economic Offences wing of Berhampur Police arrested one person in connection with an online investment fraud involving Rs 9 crore.
The accused has been identified as Anil Kumar Mishra(35) of Digapada village under Kodala Police station.
The complainant, Anurag Mishra (47) from Mayuri Vihar 4th Lane, Aska Road, Berhampur, reported being duped after investing in a fraudulent scheme promising high returns. The accused initially built trust by crediting small profits, such as Rs 2.26 lakh after an initial investment of Rs 2 lakh on April 29, 2024. Encouraged by these returns, the complainant invested Rs 9.71 crore through multiple bank transactions from his ICICI Bank accounts between May 2024 and April 11, 2025. While he received approximately Rs 3 crore as “returns” until April 2025, no further payments were made, leading him to realize he was defrauded.
Investigation revealed that the accused invested the complainant’s money in trading apps, using some profits to pay initial returns but later suffered losses, rendering him unable to repay. The investigation is ongoing to verify the accused’s claims.
Berhampur SP Dr. Saravana Vivek M urged the citizens to stay vigilant against unsolicited investment offers and digital arrest on social media and messaging apps.
He also urged the people to verify the authenticity of such schemes before investing to avoid falling prey to cyber fraud.
