Bite of hills: Apple barfi by SHG charms country
A unique and innovative sweet dish made from apples—apple barfi—crafted in Shimla’s Chauhara block has taken the country by storm. Prepared by the Jai Devta Jabal Narayan Self-Help Group (SHG), this one-of-a-kind delicacy is in high demand and is now being showcased at the popular Aspirational Haat at The Ridge in Shimla. Priced at Rs 325 per box, the sweet treat is not only popular with locals but is also gaining traction in districts like Kullu and beyond.
According to Sapna, a member of the SHG, the barfi is made using a detailed, hygienic process that ensures both flavour and longevity. “We begin by selecting the best quality apples, washing them thoroughly three to four times. The pulp is then extracted and slow-cooked. Dry fruits are added during the cooking process and once the mixture turns a deep brown, it is spread into trays. After setting for three to four days, it is cut into pieces and packed,” she explained. The barfi is known to remain fresh and fungus-free for up to a year.
Ashu Thakur, the group’s president, highlighted the growing demand. “We send products worth nearly Rs 25,000 every month to Kullu, and also cater to Kamdhenu and local markets. Making apple barfi requires considerable effort and our price reflects the dedication behind each piece,” she said. She also thanked the state government for allowing SHGs to set up free stalls at fairs and events, which has boosted their reach.
Kushal Singh, an executive with the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), Chauhara, emphasised that the SHGs are playing a vital role in rural empowerment. Plans are now underway to support similar ventures in the Dodra Kwar region to empower more women.
Shimla Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap praised the SHGs, saying, “They’re doing excellent work, and we’re committed to supporting them with training and platforms to promote their products. Many of their creations are now sought after across India and abroad.”
