Himachal among top performers under PMGSY-III

Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Uttarakhand have emerged as key performers under the Centre’s ambitious Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY-III), with significant progress made in constructing and upgrading rural roads in some of the country’s most challenging terrains. These hill states have together built over 3,800 kilometres of rural roads under the scheme as of July 28, 2025.

In Himachal Pradesh, 30 roads spanning over 1,039.75 kilometres have been completed with a total sanctioned outlay of Rs 3,123.12 crore and a recorded expenditure of Rs 3,345.82 crore, including the state’s share.

Jammu and Kashmir has seen even greater advancement, with 169 roads completed, covering 1,465.65 kilometres. The expenditure here has reached Rs 2,245.46 crore against a sanctioned amount of Rs 1,752.12 crore.

Uttarakhand has constructed 64 roads with a combined length of 1,378.79 kilometres, spending Rs 1,865.34 crore from a sanctioned project value of Rs 2,287.95 crore.

The figures were shared in response to a question raised by MP Harsh Mahajan in the Rajya Sabha, seeking details on progress, budget allocation and technological innovations under PMGSY-III in the hill and Northeastern states.

The Ministry of Rural Development informed the House that special efforts have been made to adapt the programme to the geographical and climatic challenges of the hill regions.
