‘Mickey 17’ OTT release: Where to watch Bong Joon-ho's sci-fi film featuring Robert Pattinson

Five months after its theatrical release, Mickey 17 will find a new home on the OTT space. JioHotstar announced that the action-packed sci-fi film with a blend of black comedy will debut on their platform on Thursday, August 7.

The film follows Mickey Barnes, tired of his life on Earth, who signs up to be an "expendable" on the human colony Nilfheim. When his body is regenerated after every death, he is accidentally assumed dead as Mickey 17 and replaced by Mickey 18. With two expendables existing at once, they must try to eliminate each other before the authorities catch on and kill them both. Based on the book Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, the film, directed by Bong Joon-ho, stars Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo.

In its review of the film, THE WEEK wrote, “Mickey 17 proves that Joon-ho's signature brand of comedy works better in his Korean-language films than in his Hollywood ventures... One of the jarring qualities of Mickey 17 is its tonal inconsistency and the randomness with which some characters behave. It also tends to get stuck, at times, in disappointingly lacklustre interactions that hamper the narrative pace. Robert Pattinson is safe from this, and to his credit, he makes us deeply feel the journey of a man who is exhausted after going through the die-reprint-die routine 16 times.”

The film, despite the anticipation surrounding the collaboration between the Parasite director and The Batman star, failed to perform in the theatres, many deeming the book miles better than the film. Mickey 17 was made on a budget of $118 million, with box office returns ever-so-slightly crossing the mark with $131.8 million.
