38% households in UT covered under solar scheme, Lok Sabha told

Nearly 38 per cent of the total applicants have been covered under the Pradhan Mantri-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SGMBY) in the city so far.

In response to a question raised in the Lok Sabha, Pralhad Joshi, Minister of New and Renewable Energy and Consumer Affairs and Food and Public Distribution, stated that 1,576 applications had been submitted on the national portal in Chandigarh from February 13, 2024 to July 31, 2025.

A total of 603 households have been benefitted with rooftop solar installations under the scheme as on July 31, he added. Under the scheme, households can receive up to Rs 78,000 in subsidy for solar installations up to 3 kWp capacity.

The UT Administration has planned to install 4 megawatt peak (MWp) floating solar power plant at the Sector 39 water works. The city had already commissioned north India’s largest floating solar plant with a capacity of 2.5 MWp at the Sector 39 Water Works and an additional 3 MWp floating plant has been completed and is expected to be commissioned soon.

Chandigarh has achieved a cumulative solar power generation capacity of 90 MWp, distributed across 10,988 sites as of now.
