Unauthorised multi-storey buildings raise safety concerns in Mustafabad
Deputy Speaker and Mustafabad MLA Mohan Singh Bisht on Wednesday voiced concern over the construction of unauthorised multi-storey buildings in densely populated parts of his constituency.
Speaking in the assembly, he noted most residents belong to the economically weaker sections and the majority of plots measure just 50, 60 or 100 square yards. Despite this, builders have erected unauthorised five- to six-storey buildings by bypassing laws and safety regulations.
He said the narrow roads and lanes — ranging from 10 to 15 feet wide — could exacerbate the risk of casualties and property damage, even in the event of a minor earthquake.
Bisht recalled raising the problem in a previous session, highlighting the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had only symbolically sealed the ground floors of these illegal buildings, leaving the upper floors untouched. He criticised the civic agency for not instructing BSES to disconnect electricity connections to these properties, suggesting possible corruption in the administrative process.
The MLA appealed to the Speaker to direct the MCD to ensure electricity is disconnected before sealing any unauthorised buildings and that all floors, not just the ground level, are promptly sealed to protect residents’ safety.
