11th National Handloom Day celebrated

JAMMU, Aug 7: The Department of Handicrafts & Handloom, Jammu, celebrated the 11th National Handloom Day with grandeur and cultural richness at the Conference Hall, Udyog Bhawan, Jammu, honouring the vibrant legacy of India’s handloom sector. The event featured 11 beautifully curated stalls by local weavers, cooperative societies and handloom units, showcasing the traditional textile craftsmanship of the region.
The event was inaugurated by Mohammad Nazir Sheikh, Director, Handicrafts & Handloom, Jammu, who in his address highlighted the historical significance of the handloom sector. He emphasized that artisans are not just creators but custodians of India’s cultural heritage and that empowering them through innovation and recognition is a shared responsibility.
Senior officials from the department, including Mohammad Farooq Malik, Deputy Director (Administration) and Rakesh Kumar Sharma, Deputy Director (Planning), visited the stalls and interacted with artisans, appreciating the diversity of work on display.
A key attraction of the celebration was the creatively designed “Handloom Selfie Point”, which engaged visitors visually and served as a tribute to the artistic spirit of weavers. Informational materials like brochures, scheme booklets, and awareness leaflets were distributed to promote departmental initiatives and enhance public outreach.
Artisans expressed their gratitude for being given a platform to display their work and interact directly with stakeholders and potential buyers. Certificates of Excellence and mementoes were awarded to select weavers and cooperatives for their exceptional contributions.
Rupali Mahajan, Assistant Director, Handlooms, Jammu, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing deep appreciation to Director Mohammad Nazir Sheikh for his visionary leadership. She stated that National Handloom Day serves not only as a celebration but also as a commitment to preserving cultural identity while embracing innovation. The event concluded with a renewed resolve to support artisan welfare and handloom development in Jammu.
