Chaos mars MCD committee polls

Elections to the statutory and ad-hoc committees of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) concluded on Thursday, with BJP candidates securing the posts of Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson in six ad-hoc and two statutory committees.

However, the election for the Ad-hoc Committee on Scheduled Caste Welfare and Quota Implementation was postponed due to repeated disruptions allegedly caused by AAP councillors.

Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh accused AAP members of resorting to chaos during the polling process. “They snatched ballot papers, attempted to break the ballot box and even scuffled with security personnel,” he said, adding that the election proceedings had to be halted twice due to the unrest.

He alleged that AAP had no respect for constitutional processes. “When they were in power for two and a half years, they didn’t allow the formation of special and ad-hoc committees. Now that the BJP is conducting these elections democratically, they are trying to derail the process,” Singh said.

Mayor Singh congratulated the newly elected members and reaffirmed the BJP’s commitment to transparent governance and improved civic services in Delhi. He assured that “AAP’s politics of disruption will not stall development.”

Leader of the House in MCD, Pravesh Wahi, went a step further, calling AAP “anti-Dalit” and accusing it of deliberately preventing a Dalit councillor from becoming Mayor during its tenure. “Now by obstructing the election of the SC Welfare Committee, they’ve once again shown their disregard for the rights of the Scheduled Castes,” he said.

Wahi claimed that AAP councillors poured water into the ballot box, snatched papers and created a violent atmosphere during the polling. “This level of anarchy is shameful for democracy,” he said, stressing that the BJP remains committed to safeguarding the constitutional rights and dignity of the Dalit community.
