Chandigarh Housing Board to review size of lift in apartments

The Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) has decided to further examine the issue of dimensions of lifts in its flats.

During a key meeting of CHB officials with board members and representatives of RWAs today, differences appeared over the size of the lifts to be installed in flats.

The board had recently approved the much-awaited proposal for installation of lifts. Residents welcomed the move, but differed over the size of the lifts. Residents from Sector 38 and other areas raised objections to the proposed large-sized lifts, arguing that the cost of installation would be too high and the size was a way more than their daily needs.

According to officials, the Central government has issued guidelines stating that lifts should be large enough to accommodate a wheelchair.

During the meeting, it was stated that instead of a 13-person capacity lift, a more economical 8-person lift should be installed. The cost difference between the two is reportedly around Rs 6–7 lakh.

CHB officials assured that the matter will be further examined. The final decision on the lift dimensions, associated costs and necessary changes to the building plan manual is expected to be taken during the next CHB meeting on August 25.
