‘Will give some advice to PM Modi’: Israel PM Netanyahu on ‘how to deal with Trump’, says Modi and Trump are…
New Delhi: In a significant statement amid the ongoing tussle between India and US due to the massive tariffs that Indian exports have been put under, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has given a statement that has taken the world by surprise. In a recent interaction with a group of visiting Indian journalists, Netanyahu said that he would give some advice to PM Modi on dealing with US President Donald Trump. The Israeli PM has also said that he would like to visit India “soon”.
Why Netanyahu will advise PM Modi?
As India-US ties are reeling under some strain after US President Donald Trump imposed 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods, the Israeli prime minister said both sides should amicably resolve the issue. To a question on whether he would give any advice to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on dealing with Trump, the Israeli leader half-jockingly said he would do so privately, a report by PTI said.
What Netanyahu said on PM Modi and Trump?
“Modi and Trump are terrific friends of mine. Yes I would give Modi some advice (on dealing with Trump), but privately.”
“There is a basic understanding in relationship between India and the US. The basis of the relationship is very solid. It will be in the interest of India and the US to arrive at a common ground and resolve the tariff issue,” the Israeli PM was quoted as saying by the report.
“Such a resolution will be good for Israel as well as both the countries are our friends,” he added.
Will Trump reduce tariffs on India after trade talks?
US President Donald Trump has ruled out negotiations with India on the tariffs that will rise to 50 per cent later this month, a report by IANS news agency said.
“No, not until we get it resolved”, he said when a reporter asked him if he expected more negotiations following the announcement of the 50 per cent tariff that is to take effect on August 27.
