Ujjwala beneficiaries will now get this much LPG subsidy! Check details here

The central government has approved the continuation of a subsidy of Rs 300 on domestic gas cylinders under the PM Ujjwala Yojana till the financial year 2025-26. This benefit will be available on a maximum of 9 refills in a year, which will provide relief to crores of poor families. The decision will cost Rs 12,000 crore and will increase the economical use of LPG.

The central government has taken a big decision regarding LPG gas subsidy under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). In the meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approval was given to continue the subsidy of Rs 300 on 14.2 kg domestic gas cylinder. This facility will be available till the financial year 2025-26 but its benefit will be available only on filling the cylinder maximum 9 times a year. The government estimates that this decision will cost around Rs 12,000 crore. Its direct benefit will be given to crores of Ujjwala beneficiaries, whose pockets will get relief amid inflation.

Why was this decision taken?

India is dependent on imports for about 60% of its LPG needs. In May 2022, the government started a subsidy of Rs 200 on every cylinder so that the fluctuations in global prices do not affect the poor families. This was applicable on a maximum of 12 refills in a year and was also given proportionately for 5 kg cylinders. Now LPG will be cheaper for the beneficiaries of Ujjwala Yojana due to subsidy of Rs 300 instead of Rs 200. The government believes that this step will increase the continuous and economical use of cooking gas.

LPG consumption improved

In the last few years, there has been a steady increase in LPG usage among the families associated with the Ujjwala Yojana. In 2019-20, an average of 3 refills were done per beneficiary, which increased to 3.68 in 2022-23 and about 4.47 in 2024-25. Statistics show that now more people are using LPG regularly, which has also reduced health problems caused by smoke.

Ujjwala Yojana was started in 2016

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was started in May 2016. Its purpose was to provide LPG connections to poor families, especially women, without any advance deposit. As of July 1, 2025, about 10.33 crore connections have been given across the country. Under this scheme, beneficiaries do not have to spend anything on cylinder, regulator, pipe, DGCC booklet and installation charges. Under Ujjwala 2.0, the first refill and a stove are also given free. All these expenses are borne by the government and oil companies together, so that poor families can start using LPG without any financial burden.
