Volkswagen Polo Named ‘Best Car of the Half Century’ at British Motor Show

Milton Keynes – The Volkswagen Polo has been crowned Best Car of the Half Century in the Best Cars of the Year, The New Car World Championships, marking another milestone in the model’s 50-year legacy.
The announcement comes ahead of the British Motor Show, opening Friday at Farnborough International Exhibition and Conference Centre, where the Polo will feature among the headline attractions. The award mirrors the recognition given to the Volkswagen Golf last year during its own golden anniversary.
First launched in 1975, the Polo has grown from a modest city runabout into one of the world’s most successful small cars, with over 20 million sold across six generations. Its enduring appeal was a decisive factor for the judging panel- a mix of automotive designers, engineers, industry leaders, motorsport figures, journalists, and event organisers.

Mike Rutherford, automotive journalist and founder of the awards, described the Polo as “the most consistently credible supermini of the past 50 years.” He cited its balance of design, practicality, build quality, affordability, and low running costs as key to its success.
“Since the Mk1 version, it has evolved from a basic supermini into a small, borderline premium family hatchback,” Rutherford said. “No wonder it remained one of the top 20 best-selling cars in Europe last year.”

Beyond everyday motoring, the Polo has a decorated competition history, with the Polo R WRC securing four World Rally Championship titles. Over the years, performance-oriented models like the GT, G40, and GTI have lent a sporty touch to the moniker.
The Polo is now in its sixth generation and still embodies Volkswagen‘s recipe for affordable yet capable transportation. This shows that a small car can make a great influence on the world stage.
