Telangana rains: Cloud burst in Hyderabad? IT companies told to enable WFH

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert warning for heavy to very heavy rains in Telangana today for some districts. 

The Telangana government has also ordered the closure of all schools in five districts for two days, given the red alert issued and declared half-day schools in Hyderabad on August 13 and 14. All schools will be closed for Independence Day on August 15.

IT companies have also been advised to enable work from home.

The red alert was issued for 5 districts, and an orange alert was given for 9 districts. Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Mahabubnagar, Hanumakonda, Janagama, and Warangal districts have all been issued a red alert. Peddapalli, Karimnagar, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Siddipet, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Medchal Malkajgiri, Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad will face very heavy rains. 

There is also a possibility of cloudbursts for the next two days.

In preparation for the weather forecasts of rain in Telangana for the next 72 hours, Chief Minister A. Revanath Reddy has instructed officials to take necessary steps to prevent the loss of life during the heavy rains.

The chief minister asked officials to ensure that there is no vehicle movement on the flooding bridges, canals and streams and causeways brimming with heavy flows in the low-lying areas, according to an official press release.

The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency has advised residents in low-lying areas to move to safe locations and stay alert. 

The agency also said that heavy rains are forecasted from August 13 to 15 and that northern Hyderabad, Medchal, Malkajgiri district, and Cyberabad areas are most likely to be affected. HYDRAA commissioner A.V. Ranganath also said that about 100 to 150 mm may fall in some places, like Medchal and Cyberabad

Hanumakonda, Jangaon, Mahabubabad, Warangal, and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri districts are all likely to face very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on August 13 and 14. Rainfall of 10-15 centimetres is expected in these areas, and some places may receive up to 20 cm.
