Manchester United have reportedly asked their Brazilian winger Antony to find a club to join in the next seven days as the Red Devils prepare for a new campaign with a revamped attack. Meanwhile, reports claim that Real Betis, where Antony had an incredible loan spell last year, may enter the race to sign the former Ajax star on a permanent deal.
Antony became the second most expensive player in the history of Manchester United when they paid £81.3 million for him in 2022. It was the costliest buy by the Red Devils ever, after the £89 million signing of Paul Pogba in 2016. However, the 25-year-old failed to live up to expectations at the Theatre of Dreams, often producing mediocre performances for Erik ten Hag. He was brutally trolled even by a section of United fans as he struggled to justify the sum spent on him.
Antony to Real Betis
Antony secured a move to La Liga in January and quickly adapted, making an immediate impact for Betis. He earned a starter's spot under Manuel Pellegrini, managing six goals and four assists in 19 matches. This is a stark contrast to his time at United, where he had managed just 12 goals from 96 games across all competitions.
While both Antony and Betis wanted to continue their association, Manchester United said they would not let the winger have another loan spell. If the Spanish side wanted him, they would have to buy him. During the loan spell, Real Betis were only paying a fraction of Antony's huge salary. It was widely considered that Betis could not afford the finances to make Antony's stay permanent, as his asking price was far more than they could come up with. Antony's current contract at Old Trafford runs out on June 30, 2027.
What changed?
However, the story has taken an unexpected twist, according to reports. Real Betis is concerned about its prospects for the season after their midfield maestro Isco suffered a fibula injury during a pre-season game, which has ruled him out for about three months.
They need an influential star with proven credentials to inspire the team in Isco's absence, and there are only a few who could fit the bill better than Antony. Making this easier, Manchester United have long forgotten the dream of making a profit by selling Antony. They have come to terms with reality and are willing to sell the former Ajax player for a much lower price—somewhere around €30-40 million. Brazilian winger Denílson and Spaniard Borja Iglesias are the costliest purchases in the history of the club, who were bought for €32 million and €28 million respectively. This proves Antony is now available within a price range they can afford.
Real Betis will begin their La Liga season against Villarreal on August 17.
