Actress Minu Muneer, who has accused several Malayalam actors of sexual harassment, was arrested by Tamil Nadu Police on Wednesday night for allegedly trying to traffic a young woman into a sex racket. Muneer was reportedly picked up from Aluva in Ernakulam district for reportedly trying to hand over the girl, who is her relative, to the sex mafia. She was taken to Chennai on Thursday morning, media reports said.
According to reports, Minu Muneer convinced the woman that she could help her get into the film industry if she was willing to travel with her to Tamil Nadu. However, her intention was to hand the girl over to a sex mafia. According to the investigation team, the incident took place in 2014, Manorama Online said in a report.
After the Hema Committee report stirred up controversy in Kerala, Minu Muneer accused multiple mainstream Malayalam actors, such as Jayasurya, Balachandra Menon, Mukesh, Edavela Babu, and Maniyanpilla Raju, of sexual harassment. Minu Muneer alleged that an actor in the industry had demanded "compromises" in order for her to gain membership in the actors' organisation, AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists). In August 2024, she had claimed that her decision to speak out was influenced by the Kerala government's plea to victims to come forward.
Minu claimed that in 2008, during a film shoot in the Secretariat, actor Jayasurya hugged and kissed her from behind and even invited her to his flat. By 2013, she had acted in six movies, and to get a membership in AMMA, an actor only needs to be cast in three films. When she called actor Edavela Babu, then an office-bearer of the organisation, Minu alleged that he invited her to his flat to fill out a form. While filling out the form, he allegedly kissed her on the neck, following which she left the building immediately.
She alleged that later, actor Mukesh spoke to her inappropriately over the phone and in person, and even invited her to his villa. She claimed that actor Maniyanpilla Raju misbehaved with her and spoke to her inappropriately while travelling in a vehicle. She went on to add that someone from the actors' association called her up and told her that she would not be given a membership. Following this, she left for Chennai, as she said she was tired of such experiences.
