Trump-Putin Alaska Summit LIVE Updates: Trump says ‘no deal until there’s a deal’ on Ukraine war after talks with Putin
Trump-Putin Alaska Summit LIVE Updates: Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump have finished their meeting in Alaska, the Kremlin said. The two leaders spoke for about two and a half hours in Anchorage. In a joint statement, Putin invited Trump to visit Moscow for further talks on the war in Ukraine. The meeting began on Friday at Elmendorf Air Force Base, the largest U.S. military base in Alaska. In the past, this base was used during the Cold War to keep watch on the Soviet Union.
Donald Trump said he and Russian President Vladimir Putin made “some headway” and “great progress” during their talks, but stressed, “there’s no deal until there’s a deal.” Speaking after the summit in Anchorage, Alaska, Trump said he would soon speak with NATO leaders, other key figures, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to update them on the meeting. “It’s ultimately up to them,” he noted.
Trump described the discussions as “extremely productive” and said many points had been agreed upon, though no final deal was reached. He added that Ukraine would need to agree with what Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and other U.S. officials discussed with Putin, but gave no details about a possible framework.
Neither Trump nor Putin took questions after their statements.
In his remarks, Putin admitted that U.S.-Russia relations have worsened in recent years. Breaking from the usual diplomatic order, he spoke first at the joint press event. Putin said the root causes of the Ukraine war must be addressed for the conflict to end, and urged Ukrainian and European leaders not to disrupt what he called “emerging progress.”
