Flash flood alert issued in Konkan, Mumbai, as heavy rains and surface winds batter the region

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a flash flood alert for the next 24 hours in Maharashtra’s Konkan region in Mumbai for Sunday.

The alert comes as heavy rains continue to batter the regions. The floods are likely to occur in Konkan and Goa, including Mumbai City, Palghar, Raigarh, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Suburban Mumbai districts.

The press release said that the areas fall under the ‘Outlook for Flash Flood Risk' till 5:30 IST of August 18.

According to a press release by the IMD yesterday, very heavy rainfall will pour down over regions including Goa, Maharashtra, and Gujarat during the next seven days till 19th August. Extremely heavy rainfall can also be expected over Konkan, including Mumbai, Goa, and the Ghat area of Madhya Maharashtra, from August 16-19

The water levels of the Mithi River in Mumbai also increased after the continuous rains.

The IMD had also issued an orange alert for heavy rains in Mumbai for August 17. Thane and Palghar will be under orange alert till August 19.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall can be expected in the city and suburbs with occasional gusty winds up to 40 to 50 kmph to 60 kmph.

The city had received up to 92.81 mm of rainfall over the past 24 hours. The rain has caused waterlogging, flooding, and landslides in several areas. Over 350 flights were diverted from the region yesterday.

Fishermen have also been advised not to venture off into the Arabian Sea till 21st August on the west coast, including from the Konkan region and Goa.
