Mehvish, Zorawar shine at Punjab sub-junior badminton championship
The Punjab State Sub-Junior Ranking Badminton Championship, held at the Raizada Hansraj Badminton Stadium in Jalandhar, concluded on Sunday after four days of intense competition.
The tournament, which attracted over 350 players from 23 districts across Punjab, showcased exceptional talent in both boys’ and girls’ categories for under-15 and under-17 age groups. A total of 489 matches were played throughout the event.
Organised by the Punjab Badminton Association (PBA), the championship featured 10 events across both age groups. Among the standout performers were Mehvish Kaur of Gurdaspur and Zorawar Singh of Jalandhar, who both claimed double crowns in their respective categories. Mehvish dominated the girls’ section, winning singles titles in both the under-15 and under-17 categories. Zorawar, on the other hand, triumphed in the under-15 boys’ singles and paired with Satwik Bhatia to secure the doubles title, highlighting his remarkable skill and consistency.
The prize distribution ceremony was attended by Rakesh Khanna, chief patron of the Punjab Badminton Association, and Advisor A.K. Kaushal, along with senior PBA office-bearers, including Ritin Khanna, Anupam Kumaria, Chitranjan Bansal, Shamsher Dhillon, and Parminder Sharma, all of whom lauded the young athletes for their excellent performances.
In the Girls’ Doubles Under-17 category, the Ludhiana pair of Amelia Bhakoo and Ananya Nijhawan emerged victorious. In the Boys’ Doubles Under-17, the Amritsar/Jalandhar duo of Kritagya Arora and Viraj Sharma claimed the top spot, while Aditya Sharma and Viren Seth (Ludhiana/Jalandhar) finished as runners-up. The Under-17 Mixed Doubles title was secured by Sahib and Samaira Arora (Amritsar).
