Breaking: Heavy Rains Trigger Red Alert In Maharashtra, Monorail Service Disrupted In Mumbai
Maharashtra continues to battle relentless rainfall as the Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for several regions, including Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan, Dombivli, Bhiwandi, and Palghar. Heavy downpours since last night have forced schools in Thane, Bhiwandi, and Palghar to remain shut. Local train services were also affected, though operations have now resumed with authorities urging passengers to avoid overcrowding to prevent risks. The monsoon has already claimed six lives across the state, while five people remain missing in Nanded due to flash floods. In Mumbai, the city’s pace slowed down further when a monorail stalled between two elevated stations after a power supply failure. The monorail, overcrowded at the time, triggered panic among passengers as the air-conditioning system also stopped functioning. Emergency brakes were applied due to excess load, compounding the disruption.Fire brigade teams and engineers were immediately deployed for the rescue operation, and after hours of effort, all stranded passengers were safely evacuated. While officials confirmed there was no major damage, many commuters expressed anger over the lack of emergency exits and safety measures inside the monorail. The incident has raised serious concerns about the preparedness of urban transport systems during heavy rains.
