In a shocking incident, a class nine student fatally stabbed another student to death in a school in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad on Tuesday. The victim, a class 10 student, succumbed to death despite being rushed to a private hospital for treatment in Maninagar.
Both the accused and the victim were students at the Seventh Day School in Ahmedabad’s Khokhara. The murder, however, happened outside the school premises. The students engaged in a minor scuffle, which escalated, after which the younger boy stabbed the older one to death.
There are unconfirmed reports from a student, who claims to be an eyewitness, that the security personnel of the school watched the entire incident and did not intervene. “He stabbed him with a physics instrument. There are claims that he attacked the victim with a stick, but there is no such stick,” the eyewitness said while refuting reports that it was the school authorities who rushed the victim to the hospital. “No one from the school offered assistance. In reality, it was school students and Nayan's friends who took him to the hospital,” he added.
However, the accused child is said to have confessed to having committed the crime alone. He is currently in police custody.
Following the child’s death, a conflict broke out at the school as the students belonged to different communities. The victim’s parents and members of his community barged into the school and vandalised it. There are reports that the staff, including the school principal, was assaulted.
Meanwhile, school administrator Mayurika Patel told Gujarat Samachar that action has been taken against the accused. “This incident happened on the road outside the school, which we are not even aware of. We will take action against the accused child and give him an LC. He did not bring the weapon to school; he kept it in the car outside. This incident happened outside the school,” Patel added.
The authorities claimed they provided CCTV footage to the police, who are investigating the matter. It emerged that the student who was killed had several prior complaints lodged against him with the school, and action had been taken in those instances.
